Jobu reacts to the reduced Subway Series matchup between the Yankees and the Mets.

For those of you who didn’t see, MLB announced it’s schedule for the 2013 season. There are a lot of interesting nuances in next season’s schedule, but one of the ones I see is just plain stupid. The Yankees and the Mets will play two series of two games each in 2013, instead of the customary two series of three games. What dumbass came up with this gem?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not upset that there are two less games between the cross town rivals. In fact, I applaud this change. The yearly Subway Series has definitely gotten a little stale for me, and so I’m happy to be subjected to less games between the Yankees and Mets. The problem is that this is a meek and half-assed solution to the staleness problem.

Admitting that six games too much is really just admitting that two series are too many, isn’t it? No one said “God! These three game series’ drag on so much! If only someone would make each series shorter, then we wouldn’t be so terribly bored with this!”

No. Of course no one said that. That’s very stupid. The problem is that we are subjected to two different series. If anything, making these series two-gamers makes the entire experience worse. There’s something to be said for the purity of the three game series. Somebody always wins these series. You can tie the season series, but you’re never going to tie a three-game series. Now, you have three opportunities for a boring result.

How pointless and boring will it be if the Yankees and Mets split each series one game to one? There is zero satisfaction in that. There’s no “oh you might have taken two out of three from us at Yankees Stadium, but you just wait and see when we win the series at Citi Field!”

The real fix would be to just go back to the way we used to do things, which was one series per season with alternating locations. In 2013, they should play at Citi Field (let the Mets have something positive in their lives). In 2014, you would shift the series back to the Bronx. This eliminates the tie possibility all-together, and someone can bring home real bragging again. Playing the Mets is supposed to be special. It’s supposed to be a treat. Six games over-saturates the market, which is not good. Four games, split over two series does the same thing, but creates a situation where no bragging rights could be taken home.

Way to go Bud Selig, you’ve half-assed and ruined something else. Congratulations. You’re awesome. And I’m not even going into the opening day Interleague game in this post!

  1. I would oppose having a Subway series altogether, because if I wanted t osee the Mets play every year I’d be a Mets fan. But easy wins are easy wins. Let’s make it 15 games a season.
